Lot description: Ancients SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, Gelon I (485-478 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.04 gm, 2h). ANACS XF 40. Ca. 485-480 BC. Bearded charioteer, reins in right hand, kentron in left, walking slow quadriga left; Nike flying left above to crown horses / ΣVRAKOΣI-ON, head of Arethusa right, wearing loop and pendant earring, pearl necklace, and pearl diadem, hair tucked up behind under diadem; four dolphins swimming clockwise around. SNG ANS 19. Charming specimen with radiant surfaces. Ex Heritage Auctions, Auction 3099 (6 May 2022), lot 31008. The style on this early Syracusan tetradrachm is a masterpiece of late archaic art. It belongs to the period immediately following the arrival of Gelon, tyrant of Gela, who moved his court to Syracuse in 485 BC, making Syracuse the leading city of Sicily. The obverse die is different than the one plated in ANS, which is the only other die showing the quadriga walking left and Nike crowning the horses. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/greek/ancients-sicily-syracuse-deinomenid-tyranny-gelon-i-485-478-bc-ar-tetradrachm-26mm-1704-gm-2h-anacs-xf-40/a/61375-25019.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61375-05202024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
