Lot description: Septimius Severus, 193-211. Denarius (Silver, 17.5 mm, 2.56 g, 1 h), Emesa. IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II Laureate head of Septimius Severus to left. Rev. VICTOR IV-ST AVG Victory advancing left, holding wreath in right hand and palm in left. BMCRE 398 var. (head right). RIC IV 362A var. (same). RSC 739-740 var. (same). Unrecorded in the standard references with left facing head. Extremely rare. Minor obverse deposits and struck from a somewhat worn reverse die, otherwise, very fine. This specimen is one of only a handful of known left-facing imperial coins struck in the East for Septimius Severus shortly after his victory over Pescennius Niger in the civil war of 193. Interestingly, our coin shares the obverse die with CNG MBS 57 (2001), 1323 and Giessener Münzhandlung 241 (2016), 2342. However, the reverse die links it to Giessener Münzhandlung 90 (1989), 1056, which also features a left-facing obverse. Starting price: 150 CHF |
