Lot description: SELEUKID EMPIRE. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 B.C. AR obol. .7 gm. 8 mm. Struck in the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Ekbatana mint. Struck circa 311-295 B.C. Youthful head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in field left, monogram above forepart of horse grazing to left. Price 3907. HGC 9, 53c. SC 216.5. Good Very Fine; rich old toning; fine style; uncommonly well centered on a full round flan; particularly nice for issue, and pleasing in hand. Very Rare (and very hard to photograph). From a collection of high quality ancient coins formed in the American Midwest in the 1950s, carefully sourced from Spink & Son in London, NFA (Edward Gans) in NYC, and Earle Stanton in LA., among others. "The Seleukid Empire was the largest of the successor states carved from the short-lived empire of Alexander the Great, and arguably the most culturally diverse.
