Lot description: KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.62 g, 1h). Magnesia on the Maeander mint. Struck circa 297/6-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; monogram to inner left, ornament on throne. Thompson –; cf. Müller 555–6; HGC 3, 1750e; Meydancikkale 2725 (uncertain mint). Traces of find patina, light porosity. Near VF. This issue is not attributed to Magnesia in Meydancikkale, but certain elements of this coin strongly suggest it belongs to that mint, such as the ornament on the throne, and the similarity of the obverse style compared to that found on most published examples of Thompson 115. The ornament is also found on select issues of Mytilene and Ephesos, but the obverse style at those mints is quite different from what is found here. Estimate: 200 USD |
