Lot description: Crete, Cnossus. Stater circa 360-320, AR 24 mm, 10.83 g. Head of Demeter r., wearing wreath of grain ears, single-pendant earring, and necklace; below neck, KN. Rev. Cruciform labyrinth with five pellets in centre; circular incuses in outer quarters. Svoronos, Numismatique 46 var. (no incuses on reverse but for this obverse die, cf. 43 and 47-48). Le Rider, Crétoises pl. VII, 4–5 var. (this obverse die but square incuses on reverse). SNG Delepierre 2340 (this obverse die). Weber 4413 var. (this obverse die but no incuses on reverse). Rare and in unusually fine condition for this difficult issue. An interesting portrait of fine style and a light old cabinet tone, the reverse from a worn die, otherwise good very fine Ex Coin Galleries 9 March 1956, 1594; Hesperia Art Bulletin III, undated circa 1958, 49 and Triton XVIII, 2015, 548 sales.
