Triton XXII, lot 431 1.72 g - rare, well-struck and with a fine old toning On the other side of the profile of the syncretic Greek/Egyptian god, Zeus-Ammon is seen the fruit of the now extinct Silphio (Silphium) plant. Legend said that this fruit was a gift from Apollo himself and the Romans considered it worth its weight in gold. Among other qualities it was considered to be a potent aphrodisiac, and turned upside down the fruit is clearly recognized as a prototype of the heart as we know it. VF Ex.
