Halfway between Katane and Syracuse, on a hill south of Symaithos, Naxos founded Leontinoi around 729 BC, after the Sikelian residents had been expelled. As in Katane, the other Naxian colony, Apollo, whose Delphic oracle had led the settlers here, was the main god. At the beginning of the 5th century BC, Hippocrates of Gela conquered the city and installed Ainesidemos as tyrant. From then on, the fate of the city depended on the stronger poleis in the neighbourhood. Hieron settled the exiled Naxians and Catanaeans here. After the fall of the tyrants in 466 BC, Leontinoi turned back to the Ionian tribesmen; it concluded a treaty of friendship with Athens in 433 BC, which led to several Athenian interventions.

Gorgias of Leontinoi, the famous sophist, led an envoy to Athens. In 422 BC, Syracuse occupied the city and partially destroyed it. Leontinoi has never recovered since. Today, Lentini is the centre of Sicilian orange production. Coinage was initially influenced by Syracuse and Gela in the first quarter of the 5th century BC. Rich silver issues testify to the importance of the city; the Apollo heads (from around 450 BC) compete with those of the neighbouring city of Katane, but were cut by other die cutters.
