Kroton was at times the most powerful Greek city in Lower Italy. Around 720 BC, Achaer founded it at the river delta of the Aisaros (now Esaro) into the Ionian Sea, halfway between Metapont and Lokroi. The philosopher Pythagoras, expelled from Samos, founded a brotherhood with strict rules here around 530 BC, which controlled the fortunes of the city for decades. However, Pythagoras had to flee from Kroton and died in Metapont. The destruction of Sybaris by Croton and the minting of the splendid incuse nomoi with the tripod occurred during this period of greatest splendour. Milon of Kroton was the most famous athlete of his time. We know little about the history of the city in the 5th century, and there seems to have been a longer break in the minting of coins. Around 390 BC, Kroton founded a league of Greek cities against the Lucanians and Syracuse, but was conquered by Dionysius I in 388 BC, liberated again after twelve years of occupation, reoccupied by Agathocles in 299 BC, and finally subjugated by Rome in 277 BC, which made Kroton a colony in 194 BC. The main cults were Hera Lakinia - a pillar of her temple still stands (at Capo Colonna 10 km south-east, the eastern tip of the Lucanian-British peninsula) -, Zeus, Apollo and Heracles, whose images and emblems appear on the coins; Heracles as the founder of the city (inscription OIKIETAE), Apollo in battle against the python snake. Croton's power in archaic times manifests itself on the so-called alliance coins. Only small traces of the ancient city have been preserved in today's Crotone
