The three Doric temples of Paestum in the Lucanian lowland near the sea are among the architectural monuments of the Greek world. The city that built these temples was not called Paestum, but Poseidonia. It was founded from Sybaris in the early 7th century BC 8 kilometres south of the delta of the Sele. The main god was Poseidon. Temples and coins testify to a great flourishing in the 6th and 5th centuries; an important ceramic workshop was active in the 4th century, at a time when Poseidonia was no longer occupied by Greeks but by Lucanians and had taken the name Paiston = Paestum. Paestum became a Latin colony in 273 BC. Incuse nomoi have been struck here since around 530 BC - as in Metapont, Sybaris, Kaulonia and Kroton - but differ from the coinage of these four cities in their lighter weight and greater variation in the coin design. After a longer break, the incuse coinage is replaced by double-sided nomoi, which show Poseidon in an archaic position on the obverse and the bull on the reverse, whose image is derived from the founding city of Sybaris.
