One of the most important Greek cities in Lower Italy, founded by the Achaeans, the pre-Dorian population of Thessaly and the Peloponnese, with the participation of Sybaris on the shallow shore of the Gulf of Taranto between the deltas of the Bradano and Basento rivers around 700 BC.

Two founding heroes are named: Metabos and Leukippos. Little is known about the history of Metapont. Shortly before
500 BC, Pythagoras came to Metapont from Kroton with his school; he died here and was then honoured as a hero. In 415 BC, Metapont supports Athens in the Sicilian expedition. Captured several times during the 2nd Punic War, Metapont was destroyed by Rome in 207 BC. Cicero only knew it as a ruined city. The extensive coinage gives us a better idea of the importance of the city than the sources. It begins with large issues of incuse nomoi with the completed image of an ear of corn. The ear of corn, the emblem of Demeter, remains the emblem of Metapont. In the Classical and early Hellenistic periods, a large repertoire of images of gods was added to the coinage like hardly any other mint in Greece; some are named with the inscription, e.g. Acheloos, Homonoia, Hygieia.

Die cutters from Herakleia and Taranto signed in the 4th century: Aristoxenos, Kal... Bronze coinage also began during this period, with some coins bearing the rare denomination "obolos". Metapont has been the subject of archaeological research for decades; a number of sanctuaries (Apollon Lykeios, Hera, Zeus Aglaios) have been excavated. Two rows of peristasis columns ("Tavole Palatine") from the temple of Hera are still standing. The excavations have revealed that a workshop of Italic red-figure vase painting was active in Metapont.
