Michael VIII Palaeologus (AD 1261-1282). AV/EL hyperpyron (28mm, 4.09 gm, 6h). (photo-certificate) Choice XF 4/5 - 1/5, brushed, flan flaw, scratches. Constantinople. Half-length figure of the Virgin, orans, within city wall of six towers / X/M/A/Π/TH-O/Π/Λ, Michael VIII facing, kneeling slightly right, being presented by nimbate Archangel Michael standing facing behind, to Christ seated facing slightly left, scroll in left hand; IC-XC (barred) in fields. Sear 2242. Exceptional detail in the city walls. Striking sunset toning.
