Lot description:

KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 17.04 g, 5h). Amphipolis mint. Struck circa 288/7-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; monogram to inner left, [monogram(s?) in exergue]. Cf. Thompson 204 and 210 (for this monogram); cf. Müller 537; HGC 3, 1750l. Lightly toned, tiny flan flaw on obverse, traces of find patina and light scratch in field on reverse. Good VF.

From the Useless Miwa Collection. Ex Leu Numismatik Web Auction 19 (26 February 2022), lot 224.

Although it is not possible to identify the exact issue of this coin, due to the secondary control(s) being off the flan, it is undoubtedly an issue of Amphipolis, since the obverse die is known to have been used on examples of Thompson 204 (cf. Rauch 107, lot 94), Thompson 211 (cf. Merzbacher [2 November 1909], lot 2703), Thompson 212 (cf. Roma E-Sale 104, lot 220), and Thompson 213 (Noble 109, lot 3585).

Estimate: 750 USD
