Lot description:

Maximinus I AR Hybrid Denarius. Rome, AD 235. IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / SPES PVBLICA, Spes walking to left, holding flower and raising skirt. RIC IV -, but cf. 102 (hybrid sestertius of same type); BMCRE -, but cf. 240 (same); RSC -. 2.57g, 19mm, 6h.

Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare; no others on CoinArchives.

Reportedly studied by Richard Abdy at the British Museum, who wrote the following on 9th February 1999:
"You can tell instantly that this is an early issue of Maximinus Thrax because the portrait looks almost like an older version of his predecessor and it certainly lacks the characteristic chin of the later style. It would make sense to use up old reverses if possible and in this way hybrids such as these are created, besides Spes [Hope] is a good choice for the start of a new reign. I have taken a note of this in case of any future publication."

Estimate: 100 GBP
