KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 14.13 g, 4 h), Amphipolis, struck by Antipater, Polyperchon or Kassander, circa 323/2-316/5. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙ-ΠΠΟΥ (sic!) Young jockey, holding palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse to right; below horse, dolphin; below raised foreleg, pellet-in-Π. Berk 198 (2016), 53 (same dies). Cf. Le Rider pl. 46, 19 (reverse legend). Cf. SNG ANS 749-56 (reverse legend). An extremely rare variety with an interesting engraver's error on the reverse. Minor marks and with a flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of the renowned Swiss architect Max Vogt (1925-2019), ex Schweizerische Kreditanstalt Monetarium FPL, December 1993, 37.

The artist who made this reverse die forgot that he had to cut the reverse legend into the die in retrograde script so that it would appear correctly on the coin. As a result, it is now retrograde on the coin.
