| Lot description: Ancients Julius Caesar, as Dictator (49-44 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.89 gm, 1h). NGC VF 4/5 - 4/5. Military mint traveling with Caesar in northern Italy, ca. 49-48 BC. CAESAR, elephant advancing right, trampling horned serpent / Culullus, aspergillum, securis (axe surmounted by dog or wolf's head), and apex. Crawford 443/1. Sydenham 1006. Julia 9. One of the most popular types Caesar minted were of an elephant stepping on a serpent, with CAESAR in the exergue. Although there is no clear record of what these coins allude to, this design is believed to commemorate Caesar's victory in the Battle of Thapsus in 46 BC, where he defeated the forces of his political rival, Pompey, so efficiently that it was like an elephant stepping on a snake and could be seen as good defeating evil. On the reverse, he included important pontifical religious implements, a reminder to the Roman people that he was a pious man, and that he held numerous religious positions, such as Pontifex Maximus (Highest Priest). ANTONIVS•AVGVR•COS•DES•ITER•ET•TERT, head of Marc Antony right / IMP•TERTIO•III•-VIR•R•P•C, Armenian tiara right, bow and arrow crossed behind. Crawford 539/1. First Heritage has handled. Lovely specimen with delicate peach hues. This series of coins celebrate Marc Antony's victory over Armenia, which was used as propaganda to bolster his image back in Rome after failing to defeat Parthia. During the Parthian campaign, Antony had enlisted the help of Armenia; however, when it became evident that their side would lose the war, King Artavasdes II fled back to Armenia. Antony viewed this abandonment as a betrayal. While, plotting his revenge on Artavasdes II, he played nice until he made it safely out of the Armenian region. In order to enact this revenge, Antony fled to his lover, Cleopatra, and in 37 BC, used the wealth of Egypt to depose King Artavasdes II. This monetary backing became known as the "Donations of Alexandria" and the resulting political fallout of this "donation" was swift.
