| Lot description: Octavian, 44-27 BC. Denarius (Silver, 21 mm, 3.45 g, 3 h), uncertain mint in Italy (Rome?), autumn 30-summer 29. Bare head of Octavian to right. Rev. Octavian's Actian Arch: Octavian standing in facing quadriga set on triumphal arch decorated with two wreaths and two eagles; on architrave, IMP•CAESAR. Babelon (Julia) 162. BMC 624. Cohen 123. CRI 422. RIC 267. Attractively toned. Somewhat porous and with some banker's marks and tiny scratches, otherwise, very fine. According to Cassius Dio, the Roman Senate granted Augustus a triumphal arch to be erected in the Roman Forum following the Battle of Actium. Nothing today remains of the arch except its foundation, which is located at the Forum's eastern end, spanning the Via Sacra between the Temple of Castor and Pollux and the Temple of Caesar.
