Price realized: 420 CHF   (Approx. 477 USD / 441 EUR)   Note: Prices do not include buyer's fees.
Lot description:

Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.54 g, 10 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT•AVG / III•VIR•R•P•C Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG•XVIII•LYBICAE Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 130. Crawford 544/11. CRI 375. RBW 1836. Sydenham 1240. Rare. Banker's marks, otherwise, good fine.

From a Belgian collection, acquired before 2012.

Of the twenty-two legions named on Mark Antony's legionary denarii, only three carried special names along with their numerals, namely the Legio XII Antiquae, the Legio XVII Classicae, and the Legio XVIII Lybicae. They are not to be confused with Octavian's similarly numbered legions and were likely raised on short notice by Antony prior to the clash with his opponent. The name Lybica indicates that its soldiers came from North Africa.

Legio V Alaudae (the 'Fifth Legion of the Lark') was raised by Julius Caesar in 52 BC in Cisalpine Gaul to fight Vercingetorix's last stand at Alesia, and was the first legion in the Roman army to be comprised of non-citizens. The legion served under Caesar in his wars against the Pompeians, and later under Antony. It survived the 'downsizing' undertaken by Octavian after Actium, but historians are uncertain about its final destiny, as it was either destroyed during the Batavian rebellion of 70 AD, or in the first Battle of Tapae against the Geto-Dacians in 86 AD.

From the James Knox Collection of Biblical related coins, ex Künker 262, 13 March 2015, 7848.

An obscure unit, Antony's Legio IX was not identical with the famed Legio IX Hispana. The latter was an older unit, which we can trace back to the Social War (91-87 BC), and which would fight on Octavian's side at Actium. In Antony's legionary series, his ninth is alternately rendered as VIIII and IX.

Remnants of Antony's otherwise unattested Legio XX were likely incorporated into Octavian's Legio XX Valeria Victrix in 30 BC. This new unit fought in the Cantabrian Wars in Iberia in 29-19 BC, and was then moved to the Rhine frontier following Varus' disaster in 9 AD. Later, it relocated to Britain, where it helped suppressing Boudica's revolt, and was still stationed there under Carausius and Allectus in the late 3rd century.
