Lot description: PHOENICIA. Byblus, or JUDAEA. Neapolis. Caracalla, 198-217. Tetradrachm (Billon, 27 mm, 14.44 g, 12 h), 215-217. AYT KAI ANTⲰNINOC CЄ Radiate head of Caracalla to right. Rev. ΔΗΜΑΡX ЄΞ ΥΠΑΤΟC Δ Eagle with spread wings standing facing, head to left and holding wreath in beak; between the eagle's legs, lit altar. Bellinger -. Prieur -. Apparently unpublished. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine. From a Bavarian collection, formed before 2005. As the lit altar control mark was used under Caracalla both at Byblus in Phoenicia and at Neapolis in Samaria, considerable debate on the exact attribution of some of these issues has recently arisen. This is particularly relevant for this unpublished coin of a unique style. Starting price: 50 CHF |
