Lot description: Gordian III AR Antoninianus. Rome, AD 240. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma seated to left on shield, holding Victory and spear. RIC IV 70; RSC 314. 4.66g, 22mm, 11h. Good Very Fine. Possibly ex Edward J. W. Hildyard Collection, FSA (sold with a letter from Edward J. W. Hildyard to an unidentified 'Michael' dated 3/3/1958 detailing the gifting of the coin); Ex Dorchester Hoard (old collection ticket listing incorrect date for the Dorchester Hoard included). The letter from Edward J. W. Hildyard (d. 21 January 1964, who was elected to the Society of Antiquaries on 14 January 1937, was a Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society, member of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society) from his residence of Middleton Hall in Pickering is in discussion of coins recently purchased by Michael which he had sent to Edward for an appraisal. The latter regretfully tells him that the coins are not valuable and writes that "So as not to disappoint you I will make you a present of a coin from the great Dorchester hoard of some 22,000 coins found when they were building Marks & Spencer! It is worth about 10/-." This presumably refers to this Gordian III Antoninianus. Estimate: 50 GBP |
