Lot description:

CYPRUS, Kition. Melekiathon or Pumiathon. Circa 392-362/1 or 362/1-312 BC. AR Third Stater (12mm, 1.64 g, 10h). Herakles, wearing lion skin, in fighting stance right, holding club and bow / Lion attacking stag crouching right; no legend; all in dotted square [within incuse square]. Unpublished in the standard references. Lightly toned, slight roughness. VF. Very rare.

Although there is no king's name on the reverse of this issue, the obverse type here has a slight variation, with the lower part of the lion skin draped over the arm of Herakles. This variation of the long-running design at Kition was implemented during the reign of Melekiathon, and continued on the issues of Pumiathon.

Estimate: 150 USD
