Claudius I. Sestertius; Claudius I; 41-54 AD, Uncertain Thracian Mint, c. 51-4 AD, Sestertius, 26.53g. C-39, RIC-112 (Thracian mintage not recognized). Obv: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P Head laureate r. Rx: EX S C / P - P / OB / CIVES / SERVATOS in four lines within oak wreath. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex Stack's 7, December 1994, Lot 2190 #850. Though coins of this later Thracian mint under Claudius are comparatively common, earlier numismatists have failed to separate them from the two main issues of the mint of Rome, without and with P P, and from the products of a number of other Western branch mints that also copied the types of mint of Rome, though in different styles.Exceptional portrait.
