| Lot description: Caracalla. Denarius; Caracalla; 198-217 AD, Rome, 203 AD, Denarius, 3.68g. C-97, BM-280 var., RIC-130a var. Obv: ANTONINVS - PIVS AVG Bust laureate, draped r. Rx: INDVLGENTIA AVGG around, IN CARTH in exergue, Dea Caelestis, head front and holding thunderbolt and scepter, riding r. on lion above water flowing from rocks. From the Philip Ashton Collection, acquired in January 1998. The standard references fail to distinguish this variant with the goddess' head front on reverse from BM-280, pl. 34.3 with her head right.
