Lot description:

MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Time of Philip II to Alexander III, ca. 340/36-328 B.C. AV 1/4 Stater (2.14 gms), Pella Mint. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.
cf. Le Rider-54-67; cf. SNG ANS-221-3. In the name and types of Philip II. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Bow and club; kantharos above, uncertain letter or symbol below. A charming type that presents the iconic head of Herakles so associated with the Alexander III-style tetradrachms, yet here is a fractional gold format. Lightly toned and highly pleasing, with an unusual control below Philip's name.

Estimate: $800 - $1200
