Lot description:

Seleukid Kingdom. Antiochos VI Dionysos. Silver Tetradrachm (16.06 g), 144-142 BC
Apamea on the Orontes, SE 170 (143/2 BC). Diademed and radiate head of Antiochos VI right. Reverse: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ANTIOXOY ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟY, the Dioskouroi on horseback left, each holding couched lance; in right field, TRY above monogram; below horses, date (OP); all within wreath. SC 2000.2f; HGC 9, 1032. Lightly toned. Good Very Fine. Ex Jacques Schulman 247 (May 1968), 2475 Antiochus IV was supported by the general Diodotos, in opposition to the repressive Demetrios II. After defeating Demetrios and expelling him from Antioch, Diodotos became the primary advisor to Antiochus IV, taking the name of Tryhon, the abbreviation of which, TRY, appears in the right field of the reverse on this coin. Although it is not certain, Tryphon was probably responsible for assassinating the young Antiochos
