| Lot description: Iberia, Punic issues. Silver Shekel (7.34 g), ca. 218-206 BC Carthago Nova. Bare male head (Hannibal?) left. Reverse: Horse standing right; palm tree behind. ACIP 603; SNG BM Spain 104-5. Lightly toned. Short flan crack and light polishing in the reverse field. Choice Very Fine. While the horse and palm tree reverse of this coin may refer to the origin of Carthage, the head on the obverse is less certain. Although it could represent the Carthaginian deity Melkart, it gives the strong impression of a portrait. This has led to the suggestion that it represents none other than Hannibal Barca, the legendary Carthaginian general who waged war on Rome for two decades. Estimate: 1000 USD |  |
