This coin commemorates the victories of the moneyer's reputed ancestor, L. Aemilius Paullus. The letters TER on the reverse refer to L. Aemilius Paullus' three triumphs: in Spain in 190 BC, Liguria in 181 BC and at the famous battle of Pydna in 168 BC, when the Romans extinguished the independent Macedonian kingdom
