ANT•AVG / III•VIR•R•P•C, war galley under oar right with triple ram prow and scepter tied with fillet / CHORTIS•SPECVLATORVM, three standards, each decorated with wreaths and rostra. Crawford 544/12. Sydenham 1214. Antonia 103. Flashy, argent surfaces with crisp designs despite areas of softer strike.

One of the rarest of the legionary series, the Cohortes Speculatorum were some of the best naval soldiers formed into a unit whose main role was to accompany Antony, serving essentially as personal guards and spies.

The legion represented on this coin was Legio Quarta Scythica, which served under Marc Antony. After the Battle at Actium, Octavian transferred the legion to Moesia - the same legion in which served the future emperor, Vespasian.
