Lot description:

Constantius II Æ 14mm. Alexandria(?), AD 347-348(?). D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed head to right / VOT XX MVLT XXX ✶ in four lines within laurel wreath with jewel at apex; uncertain mintmark in exergue. Cf. RIC VIII 42 for similar type with pearl-diadem and a star in the mintmark. 1.68g, 14mm, 1h.

Near Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare, perhaps unpublished.

As the mintmark which one would expect to be below the wreath is not present on this example, due to it being struck off the flan, we cannot be certain of the mint that produced this coin. The style is similar to that of coins from Alexandria, a mint which is known to have produced issues with a diademed head on the obverse, as opposed to the more commonly found diademed, draped and cuirassed bust, however attribution remains uncertain as this particular type with a star at the end of the reverse legend appears to be unpublished.

Estimate: 50 GBP
