SYRIA, Decapolis. Gadara. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. (Bronze, 25 mm, 9.48 g, 12 h), dated year 224 = 160/1 AD. AYT KAIC M AYP ANTWNEINOC Draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius to right, seen from the rear. Rev. ΓΑ∆Α-ΡEWN ∆ΚC laureate head of youthful Heracles with lion skin knotted at neck to right. RPC IV.3, 6293 (temporary). Spijkerman 38. Sofaer pl. 138, 37. Dark brown patina. Rare. Very fine.


The ruins of Gadara (today located at Umm Qais in Jordan) are dramatically overlooking the Sea of Galilee. In 63 BC Pompey placed the city under Roman control and had it rebuilt as a bulwark against Nabataean expansion.
