SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18.5 mm, 4.17 g, 1 h), probably an unsigned work by Eukleidas, circa 405-400. ΣΥ-Ρ-Α-Κ-ΟΣΙ-Ω-Ν Head of Athena facing, wearing triple crested Attic helmet, earring and necklace of pendant acorns; around, four dolphins. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-ΩΝ Leukaspis, nude but for helmet, striding right, holding couched spear in his right hand and shield with his left; below and behind to left, square altar with fire burning on top and with a garland on the side; below to right, sacrificed ram lying on its back; in the exergue, here off the flan, [Λ]ΕΥΚΑΣΠ[ΙΣ]. Bearded charioteer, holding the reins in both hands and the kentron in his right, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of third horse turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, barley ear. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-Ω-Ν Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx and sphendone, double-spiral earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the field to left, three dolphins, two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. Dewing 849 (same dies). Fischer-Bossert/Tudeer 82 (O30/R55). HGC 2, 1342. Jameson 1923 (same dies). SNG ANS 290 (same dies). Of good, late 5th century style with a sedate head of Arethusa. Scattered marks and struck from a somewhat worn obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Charioteer, holding reins in both hands and kentron in his right [but mostly off the flan], driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of the third horse turned back to right; [above, Nike flying right to crown the driver]; in the exergue, dolphin leaping to left. Rev. Σ-Υ-ΡΑΚ-Ο-Σ-ΙΩN Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx, double-spiral earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the field to left, three dolphins: two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, dolphin to left. Rev. [ΣΥΡAKOΣI]ΩN Head of Arethousa to left, her hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back; she wears a double hook earring and a plain necklace; around, four dolphins. De Luynes 1231 (same dies). Fischer-Bossert, Coins, 103 = Tudeer 103 (V35/R70). HGC 2, 1345. Hunterian 62 (same dies). Lightly toned and of very attractive style. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die and with very minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.

Charioteer driving fast quadriga to left, holding kentron in his right hand and the reins in his left; above, Nike flying to right, crowning the charioteer; below heavy exergual line, a military harness, shield, greaves, cuirass, and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear; AΘΛA below. Rev. ΣΥRΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ Head of Arethusa to left, wearing a single-pendant earring and a pearl necklace, hair bound up at the back of her head in an open-weave sakkos; around, four dolphins, three swimming to left and one swimming downwards to right. Gulbenkian 305 (same dies = Jongkees 9a). Jongkees 9. Pozzi 612 = SNG Lockett 989 (same dies = Jongkees 9b). SNG ANS 358 (same dies = Jongkees 9d). Beautifully toned and most attractive. Traces of corrosion and die rust under the toning, otherwise, extremely fine.

Rev. [ΣΥΡΑ]Κ[ΟΣΙΩΝ] Head of Arethusa to left, wearing wreath of reeds, triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins; below the dolphin swimming under Arethusa's neck, signature [ΕΥΑΙΝΕ]. Boston MFA 424 (same dies). Dewing 893-895 (same dies). Gallatin O. VI-R.C. XIV. SNG ANS 369 (same dies). A beautifully toned and very well struck example without the usual die rust. Cleaning marks from removing horn silver, otherwise, extremely fine.
