Lot description: Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.64 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Siscia, irregular mint, after 318. Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right; around, imitative legend. Rev. Two victories standing facing each other; between them, cross and altar; around, imitative legend and mintmark. A beautiful imitation of charmingly crude style. Minor smoothing and with some weakness, otherwise, good very fine. From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969. This is a contemporary imitation of the so called Danubian type of Constantine's 'VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP' coinage, which was struck from 318 in Siscia. This example shows a large cross on the reverse, but it is far from certain that it was meant as a Christian symbol. Starting price: 50 CHF |
