Lot description:

Licinius II, Caesar, 317-324. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.34 g, 12 h), Rome, circa 320. LICINIVS IVN NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Licinius II to right. Rev. SAECVLI F-ELICITAS / P - R / R T Shield inscribed AVG set on garlanded cippus. RIC 162. Somewhat rough and with minor deposits, otherwise, about very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The rare 'SAECVLI FELICITAS' type from Rome was struck for all five members of the imperial collective. Of about 110 examples known (80 in private hands), 22 were struck for Constantine I, 6 for Licinius I, 30 for Licinius Caesar, 33 for Constantine Caesar, and 10 for Crispus. Ramskold (2018, 2020) used all 2271 coins known of the 'P R / R P' emissions to explain the deficiency of coins struck for Crispus as the result of a withdrawal of coins in his name after he was killed and a damnatio memoriae was proclaimed in 326, six years after these coins were struck.
