Lot description:

Licinius I, 308-324. Follis (Bronze, 22 mm, 2.98 g, 6 h), Rome, 317. IMP LICINIVS P F AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Licinius I to right. Rev. IOVI CON-SE-R-VATORI / A / R P Jupiter standing front, head to left, holding thunderbolt in his right hand and long scepter in his left. RIC 86. Extremely rare. Minor flan crack and slightly rough, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

RIC records only two coins for Licinius I from this emission, and none for Licinius II. This must reflect Constantine's reluctance to recognize his co-emperor, whom he had just been at war with. In the tetrarchic system divided in Herculians and Iovians, Licinius was a Iovian, and his 'IOVI' coins in this and subsequent emissions can be seen as a remnant of that system.
