Lot description: Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.47 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTV-S A[VGG] / [PA(crescent)RL?] Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291 (for prototype). Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine. From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969. The style of this piece is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The partly preserved mint mark may be 'PA(crescent)RL'. Starting price: 25 CHF |
