Lot description: Philip I, 244-249. Antoninianus (Silver, 24 mm, 6.04 g, 7 h), Antiochia, 244-245. IMP C M IVL PHILIPPVS P F AVG P M Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip to right, seen from behind. Rev. PAX FVNDATA CVM PERSIS Pax standing front, head to left, holding olive branch in her right hand and long scepter in her left. Bland 4. Cohen 113. RIC 69. An unusually heavy example, struck on a broad flan. Somewhat rough and with minor doubling on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine. From a European collection, formed before 2005. This coin commemorates the peace agreement ('PAX FVNDATA CVM PERSIS') between Philip and Shapur, in which the humiliated Romans agreed to pay a tribute of 50 Million Sestertii to the Sasanids. Nonetheless, the imperial propaganda marked the treaty as a huge success and Philip assumed the victory title 'Persicus Maximus', which is included into the emperor's titulature on the obverse ('P M').
