KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.61 g, 1 h), Memphis, struck under Ptolemy I Soter, as Satrap, circa 322/1. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. Rev. [AΛ]EΞANΔΡOΥ Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; in field to left, EY; below right wing, rose. CPE 6A. Price -. Extremely rare. A beautiful coin struck in high relief and of exceptionally fine style. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, extremely fine.

This beautiful stater belongs to Ptolemy's earliest issues as the new satrap of Egypt, struck around the time when he had Egypt's erstwhile governor, Kleomenes of Naukratis, brought to death while laying the foundation for a dynasty that would rule the country for the next three hundred years.
