Lot description:

Barbarous Tetricus II, as Augustus, BI Antoninianus. After the Colonia Agrippinensis mint issues of AD 273-274. C PIVS P TETRICVS AVG, radiate and draped bust to right / [...]SAVCS PVG, Aequitas(?) standing to left, holding scales and cornucopiae. For prototype, cf. RIC V.2 282 var. (obv. legend). 2.69g, 18mm, 7h.

Extremely Fine.

The youthful portrait and praenomen point towards a prototype of Tetricus II, who was raised to the rank of Caesar under his father. It is a matter of debate whether Tetricus I made his son joint Augustus for a short time at the end of his reign, since the few antoniniani of Tetricus II alone with the title Augustus may be ancient imitations (e.g. RIC V.3 236). Cf. Harlan J. Berk, Buy or Bid Sale 213, 19 November 2020, lot 237 for a similar legend with no IMP at the beginning which is similarly unrecorded in RIC.

Estimate: 50 GBP
