Lot description: Kings of Osrhoene (Edessa), Waël Æ 18mm. AD 163-165. Draped bust to left within wreath / Cubic cult object (Black Stone of Edessa?) on a base supported by two curved legs seen within temple building with star in pediment shown in three-quarters perspective; all within wreath. Lucius Verus laid siege to the city of Edessa in AD 165 in order to depose the pro-Parthian client-ruler Waël, son of Sahru, who had been installed by Vologases IV in place of the deposed Ma'nu VIII. Having captured Edessa, Lucius Verus reinstated Ma'nu to the throne and bestowed on him the epithet Philoromaios ("Friend of the Romans"). Estimate: 50 GBP |
