Lot description:

Philip I AR Antoninianus. Rome, AD 247-249. IMP PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / AEQVITAS AVGG, Aequitas standing facing, head to left, holding scales and cornucopiae. RIC IV 57; RSC 12. 4.57g, 23mm, 7h.

Good Very Fine. Very Rare.

Contrary to the assertion by RIC that this type is common, it is in fact the first time this cataloguer has come across this combination of obverse and reverse legends in over a decade of handling this material. What is common regarding this type though, is how very regularly it is mis-identified and listed as RIC 27b (which has the obverse legend IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG) or a variant thereof.

Estimate: 50 GBP
