Lot description:

Greco-Baktrian Kingdom, Eukratides II Soter AR Drachm. Circa 145-140 BC. Diademed and draped bust to right, with one diadem end flying upwards / [BAΣI]ΛEΩΣ [ΣΩTHPO]Σ EYKPATIΔOY, Apollo standing slightly to left, holding arrow and resting bow on ground; monogram to inner left. Bopearachchi -, cf. 3B for this legend, & pl. 23, no. 18 for a die with similar diadem ends (tetradrachm); Bopearachchi & Rahman -; Qunduz -; HGC 12, -. 3.15g, 19mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine; rough, corroded surfaces, some edge loss around 1-2h. Unpublished, and possibly unique.

From the Neil Collection.

The coins of Eukratides II are rare to appear at auction due to the short nature of his reign (there are only 203 examples listed on CoinArchives, and this figure will likely include repeats), and thus it is especially surprising to identify a new type to add to the corpus. However, this drachm complements the known tetradrachm issues of Bopearachchi's Series 3, displaying the augmented legend declaring Eukratides 'Saviour' in its new curved format, and the whimsical fly-away diadem tie on the obverse.

Estimate: 50 GBP
