John Comnenus-Ducas. As despot of Thessalonica, 1242-1244. BI Aspron Trachy (27.5mm, 2.15 g, 6h). Series I. Thessalonica mint. [I]ω ΔЄ, crowned half-length figure of John facing, wearing loros, holding scepter-cruciger and globus cruciger / St. Demetrius, nimbate, enthroned facing; holding sword across his lap in right hand; barred O to upper left, barred ΔH monogram to upper right. Cf. DOC IV 9 (for similar); cf. SB 2195 (same). Toned, large flan crack and natural hole. Good Fine. Extremely rare.

Theodore Comnenus-Ducas, as emperor of Thessalonica, 1225/7-1230. Aspron Trachy (Silver, 33 mm, 3.89 g, 6 h), Thessalonica. IC - XC / IC - AK Christ, nimbate with three pellets in each arm of nimbus, wearing tunic and kolobion, seated facing on throne without back, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left. Rev. ΘΕOΔωΡΟC ΔVΚΑ Ο ΑΓΗΟC ΔΗΜΤΡΟ (sic) Theodore, on left, wearing stemma, divitision, and jeweled loros, and Saint Demetrius, on right, nimbate, wearing military tunic, breastplate, and sagion, holding sword over shoulder in left hand, both standing facing, together holding a long staff surmounted with a cross in circle above a triangular decoration on the shaft. DOC 1a. SB 2158. A beautiful, well-struck, attractively toned and perfectly centered example of an extremely rare type. Extremely fine.


The misspelling on the reverse, ΔΗΜΤΡΟ for the expected ΔΙΜΙΤΡΙΟC, is quite curious!

OA - Δ/HM/H Half-length figure of St. Demetrius facing, beardless and nimbate, holding sword in his right hand and sheath in his left. Rev. ΙⲰ Δ John III standing facing on the left, wearing crown and loros, holding labarum in his right hand and anexikakia in his left, crowned by the Virgin Mary, nimbate, standing facing on the right; to right, MP - ΘV. DOC 7. SB 2193. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good extremely fine.
