Lot description: Portugal Pedro II Counterstamped 250 Reis ND (1688) VF35 NGC, KM33.2, LMB-92. 10.60gm. Type IV Crowned "250" counterstamp (XF Standard) on João IV 200 Reis from the Lisbon mint. From a curious issue, that consists of an older hammered coin, whose legends were later re-struck/milled by Pedro II. A visionary, Pedro modernized the minting process in Portugal by experimenting with cast planchettes, different types of presses, and other minting techniques. What he did with the old Cruzados and 1/2 Cruzados of Afonso VI (his brother) and Joao IV (his father) was an attempt to transform a hammered coin into a milled one, respecting each type by minting the new legends with the respective name of the king who first struck them. https://coins.ha.com/itm/portugal/portugal-pedro-ii-counterstamped-250-reis-nd-1688-vf35-ngc-/a/61381-21269.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61381-05192024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
