Lot description: North Queensland P(astoral) & A(gricultural) Association, 1883, in bronze (45mm), by R.C. (Robert Capner) SC, reverse inscribed, 'North/Queensland/P. & A./Association/1883/Specimens/Gold In Quartz/1st Prize/Thomas Buckland' (Armstrong & Carlisle p265). Small edge nicks, contact marks, otherwise toned good very fine. Sir Thomas Buckland (1848-1947) was a gold-mine manager, pastoralist, businessman and philanthropist. Born in England, he migrated to Victoria where he became a gold assayer. In 1872 he moved to Charters Towers in Queensland where he set up as a gold-buyer and assayer. He invested heavily in mining and was managing director of the most productive goldmine in Australasia, the Victory (Charters Towers) Gold Mining Co Ltd. In 1877 he was a member of the Charters Towers Municipal Council and was mayor in 1882 and 1883. He was also on other committees and associations and had a distinguished business career in Queensland and New South Wales and was a noted philanthropist. He was knighted in June 1935.
