Lot description: COLOMBIA, Bogotá, low-silver 2 reales, 1819 JF, struck over a Cartagena "imitation cob" 2 reales with "880" date, extremely rare, NGC G 6. Restrepo-139.2; KM-76. Interesting overstrike issue normally seen on Caracas hosts, this coin among very few known struck on Cartagena 2 reales, detectable mostly by style of castles and lions in the cross, here plainly visible on the off-center "obverse" of the new coin with clear 1819 date and full (LIBERTAD) AMERICANA, the other side with very faint "880" host date visible between pillars inside the new coin's "reverse" legend showing clear 2R and J.F assayer, deeply toned all over, highly desirable as the first new coinage struck under the United Provinces of New Granada after Bolívar's victory in the Battle of Boyacá. Estimate: $4000 - $6000 |
