BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 (modern 5) E, with crowned-O countermark on cross, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-19b; Cal-1491. 27.55 grams. Lightly toned VF on a broad, odd-shaped flan that extends past the outer border in places, hairline edge-crack, deep (75%) countermark (scarce) in center of full cross with full (doubled) date in legend, full shield with full •P-E• to left and •8-E• to right, some faint scratches in flat center, desirable pedigree. Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp auction of September 1988, lot 707) and plated as coin 544 in Sellschopp's Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971), also pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection, and Plate Coin on page 203 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 181 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
