BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 (modern 5) O, with crowned-script-a countermark (very rare) on cross, ex-Harley, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488. 26.87 grams. Broad-flan Fine with much peripheral flatness but only minimal surface corrosion (probably from the Maravillas shipwreck of 1656), full 0 of date (style with modern 5, dots between digits, and date at 11 to 1 o'clock), choice full countermark on right arm of full cross, lightly toned, hairline edge-split. Pedigreed to the Alan Harley Collection (Baldwin's auction of September 2011, lot 1857) and the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 47 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
