BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1649 O, with crown-alone countermark on shield, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1487. 27.99 grams. A very choice, well-pedigreed, and elegantly toned VF+, rare as non-salvage, exhibiting a bold full countermark at top of full shield with bold (but doubled) •P•O• to left, PHILIPPVS IIII in legend, full 49 date amidst a nearly full legend on reverse with flan extending past the outer border on that whole side. Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp auction of September 1999, lot 697), plated as coin 540 in his book Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971), and to the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 55 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 257 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
