Lot description:

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer C below erased B/L, rare, ex-Ponte. S-P5; KM-5.1; Cal-671. 27.46 grams. Huge flan that extends well past outer borders in most places, very choice full inner details and nearly full legends, AXF with contrasting toning and sediment in crevices, certainly one of the most impressive examples known of this celebrated assayer that Sellschopp famously attributed to La Plata in error. Curiously, the obverse die appears to be different from the two cataloged by Sellschopp (140, 141) and Paoletti (60, 59) but is a match with known examples of the even-rarer B/C under erasure (Sellschopp 143-145, Paoletti 61-63). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

Estimate: $5000 - $7500
