Lot description:

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer L (1st period), rare, ex-Ponte. S-P3; KM-5.1; Cal-670. 27.01 grams. Terrifically broad flan extending past the outer border in places and with mostly bold legends as a result (two spots of edge thinner, as made), the interiors full but weakly struck here and there, all elegantly toned in VF+ grade. As with assayers R and M above, we have studied assayer-L coins for decades and have come up with seven die-combinations for the 1st-period 8R (which is distinct from 2nd period, following a brief stint by assayer B), using three obverse dies and three reverse dies (none of which, ironically, was cataloged by Sellschopp or Paoletti). Like the M piece above, the current coin is a unique combination using a late reverse die with shallow tressures used by subsequent assayer B. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

Estimate: $2500 - $3750
