Lot description:

PERU, Lima, cob 4 reales, 1659 V, mintmark * above LIMA, V to left and 4 to right, rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Ortiz, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), Pellicer i Bru Plate, Calicó Plate. S-L5; KM-17; Cal-1013. 13.65 grams. Choice example of what is believed to be the first variety of this unauthorized two-year issue with lovely full * / LIMA / 1659 between well-centered pillars below nearly full and well-detailed crown, bold denomination •4 to right, also superb full cross-lions-castles, the peripheries flat but no worse than XF+ for wear and beautifully toned all over, in fact probably the finest extant, with desirably long list of pedigrees. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection, the Emilio Ortiz Collection (Swiss Bank Corp auction of September 1991, lot 66), and the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp auction of September 1988, lot 159), plated in his book Las acuñaciones de las ceca de Lima (1964), also Plate Coin in various editions of Calicó-Trigo/Aureo-Calicó's Numismática española and Plate Coin 880 on page 215 of Pellicer i Bru's El Medio Duro (1971), and pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 16 (lot 496).

Estimate: $7500 - $15000
